What to see in Bellelay
The Abbey of Bellay is an ancient abbey of the Premonstratese order, which today is a psychiatric clinic in the town of Bellelay, belonging to the Swiss commune of Saicourt, in the Jura Bernés, in the Diocese of Basel.
According to the legend, the monastery was founded in 1136 by Siginando, Preboste of the Abbey of Moutier-Grandval. He pursued a wild boar through the swearing forest. When he had finally reached it, he no longer came out of this wild area that was at the time El Alto swears. He voted to build a monastery if he managed to get to Moutier safe and except. Four days later, he finally found Moutier and then made the monastery erect, to which he gave the name of Bellelay (Belle Laie (female of wild boar in the French language)).
According to other sources, the monastery would have been built to the impulse of the Bishopric of Basel on the southwest border of the bishopric, in the territory of the Abbey of Moutier-Grandval. The monastery was confirmed by Pope Innocent II in 1142. There are numerous different spells appeared in the early stages of the monastery: Balelaia, Belelagia, Belelai, Belilaia, Bellale, Bella Lagia, Bellelagia and Bellilagia. The place name originates in the Latin vulgar Bella Lagia (Bosque Bello).
